If you plan to attend the meeting, please be a bit early, in case the meeting is moved to the Fair Grounds. If you are interested in participating, we encourage you to do so. A sign up sheet will be posted before the meeting and pulled when the meeting starts at 7 PM. Please be prepared, as the Commission may limit the time to speak to, typically, 3 minutes or so, depending on the number of speakers. As always, please be factual, accurate and respectful. The public is invited to attend the Water Advisory Board meetings. This is an opportunity to see a referral committee at work, and listen to and participate in discussion of local water issues. On the schedule for this month is Bandera, and a discussion of the greater Town of Elizabeth area. If either of these issues are of interest to you, we encourage you to attend.

The Parade of Ponds

Tickets are $15 for adults, and children under 15 years are free. Tickets may be purchased at the Extension office in Kiowa 303-621-3162 or Simla 719-541-2361 (please call ahead to ensure tickets are available, and the office is staffed) Just a reminder, Extension office in Kiowa is staffed every Tuesday and Thursday 1-4:30 through September for your gardening questions.

Simla Meet the Candidates

The candidates for Board of County Commission have been invited to (and will be invited again after the dust settles following the Primary) to attend a Meet the Candidates hosted by residents of Simla. This is a chance to ask the questions that count to you! A free hot dog lunch will be supplied. 12-1 Meet and Greet the Politicians, introductions and casual visiting; 1-1:30 Civic Kids, pre-voters can submit and ask questions in a Town Hall setting; 1:30-2:30 is Civic Simla, a chance to submit or ask questions in a Town Hall setting; 2:30 to 3:30 Last Chance Hand Shakes, open visits with candidates. A great opportunity to visit, network and get answers in an exciting election year!

Women's Club Breakfast
Russell Gates Mercantile Community Hall, Elbert Road

Adults, $6; Children $3. The breakfast is prepared by the Elbert Women's Club. The club also provides a table with gift items including books on the history of Elbert County. Proceeds are used for restoration and maintenance of the Hall, which was built in 1906. Donations may also be made by contacting 303-648-3372.

Nooner's Poker Run

"Taking Care of Our Own" a Benefit for Glen Neuenschwander "Nooner"Presented by EC Riders.
Glen Neuenschwander, given the nickname "Nooner" when he served aboard the USS Flasher SSN 613, was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. Nooner founded EC Riders, a group of local motorcycle enthusiasts known for its many local fund raising events, in 1995. EC Riders has since blossomed to over 100 members. Nooner's EC Riders' first philanthropic event was the Abbi Run to benefit a local disabled girl (Abbi). Nooner also organized a fund raiser for Jeff Wolcott from Big O Tires; who recently died from Leukemia. He has also been involved in countless other clubs and fund raising "runs."
Riders in the run will be given route instructions and an entry card. At each stop along the route Riders will collect a playing card (or facsimile); at the end of the run, the Riders with the highest poker hand will win a cash prize.
The Poker Run is open to all vehicles, not just motorcycles.
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Stagecoach in Franktown.
The last bike/vehicle to leave for the ride will be at 10:00 a.m.
The last bike/vehicle must be in by 2:00 p.m.
The run will end up at the AG Building at the Elbert County Fairgrounds in Kiowa (95 Ute Avenue).
There will be a Barbecue at the AG Building about 1:00 p.m. until the food runs out!
There will also be a Silent Auction with all proceeds going to Glen "Nooner" Neuenschwander.
