We are all well aware that Elbert County has had little snow or rain this winter. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, http://drought.unl.edu/dm/DM_state.htm?CO,W, as of March 17, 2009, western Elbert County is in "D1 Drought - Moderate" condition and the eastern county is in "D0 - Abnormally Dry" condition. In either case, moisture is low, the wind is dry and warm (or it was through Sunday, when this was written) and the fire danger is high. On March 19th, CDOT posted two High Fire Danger signs on Hwy 24, one is west of Limon, over the Elbert County line, and the second is at the Elbert County/El Paso County line. We understand that two more signs will be posted on Hwy 86, on the west side of Elizabeth, and the second near Matheson Rd.
*
Press Release from Elbert County's OEM: On Wednesday, February 18, 2009, The Sheriff’s Office, at the recommendation of the Fire Chiefs Association, increased the county wide burn ban for all unincorporated areas of Elbert County to a Stage II restriction level. This will remain in effect until further notice. This is a result of unusually high fire danger due to lack of precipitation and high winds causing red flag warnings within Elbert County.
*
Under Stage II restrictions, no open burning is allowed; the sale and use of fireworks and education rockets are prohibited. The safe use of charcoal and gas grills are allowed and not affected by this ban. Violation of the burn restriction carries penalties for 1st time offenses of $110.00 as set forth in the county burn restriction ordinance 06-01.
*
“With the unusual fire weather conditions being experienced during the winter months, and low precipitation, we determined it would be a proactive move to prevent wild land fires,” said John Hillmann, Big Sandy Fire Protection District Chief and Fire Chief Association Chairman.
*
For further information call the Elbert County Office of Emergency Management at 303.805.6131 or your local Fire Protection District.

Mr. Shea's website is http://irea-care.com/. Mr. Masson (a Republican) spoke at last month's meeting and his website is www.masson4irea.com. IREA's website is http://www.intermountain-rea.com. An alternate view of and for IREA may be found at http://www.ireavoices.org/.
*
Ballots will be mailed no later than March 18th. If you are an IREA member, we encourage you to speak with both candidates, study the issues, and make an informed decision.
