This year, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office will be sponsoring the 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness and Community Outreach Event. Planned activities include a week-long series of Coffee and Conversation domestic violence awareness events, as well as, a one-day SHOP TO STOP IT community outreach event. During these events, members of the victim services community will provide a suggested reading on the topic of domestic violence. We will also provide tools for guided conversations based on the book Whispers by Belva Plain, to women’s groups, faith groups, book club members and any community member interested in becoming more familiar about the dynamics of domestic violence. These events are an excellent way to enhance your ability to begin talking about domestic violence with family, friends, or neighbors. There is NO COST to participate, the information is free….and guess what….the Coffee is on us too! http://www.elizabethchamber.org/calendar.htm

Recycling fees will apply on all televisions and monitors, but all other electronic items will be accepted and recycled at no charge. The event will take place from 10:00am to 2:00pm at the main parking lot of Douglas County High School. Net proceeds from recycling fees and additional cash and non-perishable food donations collected during the event will help the Douglas/Elbert Task Force www.detaskforce.org continue to provide food, clothing, household necessities, utilities and rent assistance to those in need. In addition to this charitable benefit, the event will help safeguard our local environment by diverting this hazardous waste stream from area landfills. All electronics collected during the October 23rd event will be fully recycled by Blue Star Recyclers www.bluestarrecyclers.com. No materials collected will be land filled or shipped abroad for disposal. As a deterrent to identify theft residents can opt to have their computer hard drives destroyed (by request) for a $5.00 fee.
