Elbert County has always been an active, aware community that responds to tragedy and hardship with generosity, a helping hand, and sincerity. The food bank is open Mondays from 12:30 PM to 3 PM and Saturdays, 9 AM to 11:30 AM and donations may be dropped on Tuesday through Friday between 9 AM and noon. Sue Brandes is the director, and can be reached at 303-646-5991.
The food bank has served Elizabeth for the last 40 years. Sue provided the following illustration of recent changes in Elbert County: In 2007, the food bank served 96 families and in 2008, the number of families served reached 231.
Some of the items needed that we may not think about when donating to the food bank are:
Personal hygiene items like soap, tooth paste and tooth brushes, deodorant, brushes, combs, shampoo and conditioner, feminine hygiene products, laundry and dish soaps, toilet paper, etc. Sue, Pam and Joanne pointed out that food stamps will only supply food items, and families on food stamps usually don't have the resources for non-food items, either.
