October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The West Elbert County News carried the following announcement: "The Elbert county Sheriff Victim's Assistance Unit in conjunction with the Women's Crisis and Family Outreach Center, Centennial Mental Health, ECCO and the Elbert County Department of Social Services are hosting a week long series of events in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The events will take place the week of October 5th through 9th.
The Elbert County Office of Emergency Management would like to remind residents that September is “National Preparedness” month. It’s time to prepare for the changing weather and potential cold-weather emergencies. Preparing and caring a vehicle survival kit is a good habit to have, including items like blankets, warm weather gear, non perishables and water, flares and reflectors, essential medications, cell phone chargers, waterproof matches and candles, portable radios, flash lights, batteries, fire extinguisher, and 1st aid kit. Another tip is to always try and keep your vehicle full of gas during the colder months.
*
"Coffee & Conversations will be held each weekday morning from 8 AM to 12 PM at various locations throughout the county. These conversations will be hosted by professional in the community who work with victims of domestic violence. The public is invited to attend any or all of the conversations: Monday, 10/5 at Taste & See in Elizabeth, Tuesday, 10/6 at Patty Anne's in Kiowa; Wednesday, 10/7, at the Simla Family Thrift Store, Simla; Thursday, 10/8 at the Elbert Station Coffee Shop, Elbert; and lastly, Friday, 10/9, will conclude with "Shop to Stop it Day". Various local businesses have agreed to donate a portion of their sales or a flat fee on 10/9 to local agencies that serve victims of domestic violence. Participating businesses include: Chickadees, The Carriage Shoppes, Jabberwoky/Far Out Antiques, Got Flowers, Big-O Tires; Magic Dog, Elodjies Wine and Tapas, Safeway, Outback Liquor, On-the-Go, Los Volcanes, Integrity Auto, Sinclair Gas, Western Trails Steakhouse, High Plains Food, Quail Run Sports, Kiowa Pizza Place, Dancing Wolf Gallery, and Sonflower Gifts and Antiques."

The Office of Emergency Management will be bringing more CPR training opportunities to the public in October. Preparedness is not just about the weather and travel but home and health too. “Community CPR and AED (Automated External Defribulator) is the single most important training community members can do to prepare themselves for family emergencies” said Dian Bowers, Fire Chief of the Kiowa Fire Department. Emergency Management agrees and will host another class courtesy of Citizen Corps on October 10th 2009 at 10:00am with location to be determined. Seating is by RSVP only and class size is limited, so call and reserve your seat today by calling the Office of Emergency Management at 303-805-6132
