Halloween Safety Tips from the Elbert County Sheriff's Office:
Check that the costumes are flame-retardant so the little ones aren't in danger near burning Jack-o-Lanterns and other fire hazards
*
Keep costumes short to prevent trips, falls and other bumps in the night.
*
Try make-up rather than a mask: Masks can be hot and uncomfortable, and they can obstruct a child's vision, which can be particularly dangerous in the evening and night and when crossing the street or climbing up or down steps.
*
Make sure kids are wearing light colors, or put reflect tape on their costumes.
*
Trick-or-treat in groups so they aren't a tempting target for real-life goblins. Parents should accompany young children. Make sure older kids are trick-or-treating with friends. Together, map out a safe route so parents know where they'll be. Tell them to stop only at familiar homes where the lights are on.
*
Try to limit kids to trick-or-treating while it is light out. If it's dark, make sure someone has a flash light, the kids stick to well lighted streets, and they are using the flashlight!
*
Remind the kids to never enter a stranger's home or car.
*

*
