The Kiowa-Elbert American Legion Post 182 has scheduled the annual Memorial Day observance for Monday, May 25th at 11 AM at the Elbert Cemetery. Flags and flowers will be placed on the graves of those veterans interred at the cemetery and the name of each veteran will be read. A short service, patriotic song, rifle salute and taps will follow. For information, please contact Robert Humpert. *
The Simla American Legion Post 77 will hold their Memorial Day observance at the Simla Cemetery at 11 AM. Everyone is welcome to attend.
*
Next Sunday, 5/31, The Gabriel Foundation is hosting a toy making event. Parrots need jobs, things to occupy them, and chewing up toys and figuring out ways to tear things apart fits that bill, or beak! The goal is to have made a summer's stock of toys for every cage at the Aviary, located on CRs 13 & i58 in Elizabeth. Since there are over 350+ parrots in residence, this is a sizable task, but very 'do-able' if volunteers make these toys in an assembly line fashion.
*
In addition to making pvc toys, The Lumber Guy donated 7 (SEVEN) (VII) pallets of wood for toys to The Gabriel Foundation. This wood will have to be drilled and cut into chunks. We will also be cutting pvc pipe (three sizes), drilling holes, sealing one end of the pipe, threading sisal/jute through the holes, and stringing pieces of wood, and tying lots of knots! That's it. It's a simple toy, but one that can be used and re-used for years to come. (The wood just has to be replaced as the birds chew it up!)
*
Please join us on Sunday, May 31st from 9 AM-3 PM. Weekends are precious! The contribution of your time and effort to The Gabriel Foundation and their feathered friends would be greatly appreciated! Julie Murad, CEO and Founder of TGF, will be providing refreshments AFTER we're done. (No alcohol until all power tools are put away...details, details!)
*
If you can attend, please contact Patti Christie @ TGF. Her email is education.@thegabrielfoundation.org
*
